Our 11 Mo old Rotty has Parvo, the 5 year old and 12 year old mixed breeds are fine. Do I need to worry?

The pup was very sick but we got him to the Vet in time and he came home today. The other 2 dogs are fine. All the dogs have had their shots but I guess the pup's might not have taken. We cleaned up the yard, bleached as much as possible, threw out his bed, etc. Do we need to try to keep the dogs apart? What about drinking from the same water bowl? The dogs always drank from the same bowl before the illness and the older 2 are still fine.


I guess I feel that the aldult dogs were already exposed and must have been immune or they would have already caught parvo. Also is the pup in danger or reinfecting himself if we didn't get one area (carpet) bleached? Or if we possibly have the germs on our shoes, our fence, or whatever?

It's pretty rare for an adult dog to get parvo as their immune systems are a lot stronger than that of a puppy's. If they get sick at all, it's usually very mild and not life-threatening. If your Rottie didn't recieve all of his vaccinations (least amount at 8, 12 and 16 weeks), he could have had poor immunity. Parvo is a virus that can live up to a year in the environment. It is impossible to bleach or disinfect the yard. There is no way to tell how far the virus has spread. Only solid surfaces can be disinfected. Drinking from the same bowl is fine...the other dogs have already been exposed and are fine. If they were going to get sick, they already should have. I would definitely booster their vaccines if they are not up to date. The pup will not reinfect himself...his body is geared up to fight any parvo forever most likely! Bleach and clean what you can, but realize you might not get it all. Don't get any new puppies that aren't fully vaccinated (have finished their entire series of vaccines) for at least a year. And don't let any puppies visit your yard, either.
Reply:If they older dogs have been current on their vaccines they should be immuned to parvo. Although rotts are one of the breeds that are more susceptible to parvo.





The parvo virus can live a long time in the right environment and reinfection is very possible, so bleaching any area the pup defecated is highly recommended. Yes, the pup will continue to shed the parvo virus in his feces, that includes outside too.





One good thing, if the pup pulls through, his chances of getting parvo again are very minimal.
Reply:Their is always a chance that their vaccines didn't take either! Believe it or not this is common in humans too, to not have all vaccines take!





It sounds like you have done a lot of precautions. Have you checked with your vet about him coming down with it again?
Reply:What does the vet say? Parvo is a difficult virus to conquer. I remember years ago when going to dog shows and we had to make the dogs walk through a bleach solution. I would spray everything down with bleach including bowls daily just to be safe. It is such a difficult disease, so really...ask the vet.

Rotts , Dobermans, Eng.Bulldogs. if you just say Parvo they seem to catch it!!!!!
Reply:yes....please get the dogs to the vet just because they are not showing signs doesnt mean they dont have it ..you need to safe not sorry also if they are inside dogs you need to ask the vet about getting it out the house good luck

Reply:Yes, if you expose your other dogs to it they can catch it and may get sick...but you need to take in you puppy to the vet ASAP...they shouldn't drink from the same bowl either that is a faster way to catch it!!!! you might want to tell your neighbors as well if they have dogs. but be very careful and wash your hands, clothes, shoes, %26amp; ect. costantly!!!!!!





i also have gone through it early in my life it was very sad he was in the vet's office for 1 week and later we had to put him down....you might want to research it as well.
Reply:Oh yes.. the puppy with Parvo should be taken to a vet as you cannot cure it yourself.. it has to have a number of shots.. It is a horrible disease but curable.. The OTHER DOGS SHOULD NOT be around.. near the sick puppy otherwise they will surely contract the parvo also.. Please heed this advice and act accordingly.
